Introduction

The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law is dedicated to advancing knowledge of environmental law through an international network of universities teaching and researching in this area.
The Academy engages participating universities, governmental institutions and international environmental organisations in innovative multi-disciplinary research into how law can best address environmental problems around the world.
The Academy complements the work and activities of the IUCN Environmental Law Programme through its academic endeavours. It thus contributes to the mission of IUCN and the achievement of mandate of the IUCN Commission of Environmental Law .  It cooperates closely with the IUCN Environmental Law Centre .

Planning Committee Meeting for the 2009 Academy Colloquium at Wuhan University

In mid-June, Co-Director Ben Boer travelled to Wuhan to meet with colleagues at the Research Institute for Environmental Law at Wuhan University to discuss arrangements for the 2009 IUCN Academy Colloquium. The topic for the 2009 colloquium will be "Environmental Governance and Sustainability". The date for the 2009 colloquium will be the first week of November 2009.  The overall chair of the Planning the Committee is Professor Huang Jin, Vice President of Wuhan University.  The Executive Chair is Professor Wang Shuyi, who is the director of the Research Institute on Environmental Law at Wuhan University.

The meeting suggested that there will be two international representatives on the Planning Committee from the IUCN Academy Secretariat and Governing Board.   The representatives of the various Academy member University's present at the meeting will constitute the balance of the Planning Committee.

A further meeting was held to discuss a preliminary plan for a comprehensive "Teaching the Teachers” programme for China, in which a range of Chinese universities will collaborate with the Academy in developing appropriate curricula for capacity building programmes, and delivering those programs in China.

Teaching methodology and Research Workshop at Sun Yat –Sen University

Co-director Ben Boer also travelled to Guangdong province, in order to attend a Teaching Methodology and Research Workshop at Sun Yat-Sen University, an IUCN Academy, member, organized by Professor Li Zhiping and her colleagues, in collaboration with members of Vermont Law School, including Professors Tseming Yang, Marc Mihaly, Carl Yirka, Mark Latham and Michael Dworkin.   These two universities are engaged in an innovative project entitled "Greening South China”. The workshop was attended by over 30 representatives from universities and other environmental law teaching institutions in Guangdong province.  It included presentations on environmental law teaching methods, led by Professor Wang Xi, representing Shanghai JiaoTong University, an IUCN Academy member, and on environmental law research methods, led by Professor Carl Yirka. Professor Boer gave a presentation on professional training and capacity building for environmental law teaching, as well as an account of the activities of the IUCN Academy.

Climate Law in Developing Countries Conference

SER – The  Society for Ecological Restoration conference  held by Ghent University September 8-12, 2008

The conference theme is "Towards a Sustainable Future for European Ecosystems. Providing restoration guidelines for Natura 2000 habitats and species."  For more information see conference website .  Deadline for abstracts is 15 April.

The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law is co-hosting this conference with APCEL, National University of Singapore.

The  2008 Academy Colloquium in Mexico November 2008; Second Call for Papers

The 2008 Colloquium will be held in Mexico City from November 10 to 15, 2008, focusing on “Poverty Alleviation and Environmental Protection.”   The Second Call for Papers includes the list of confirmed speakers and a detailed list of topics .
