The Seventh Annual Colloquium of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law will take place in Wuhan, China, November 1 – 5, 2009. The event is being organized by the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and the Research Institute of Environmental Law, Wuhan University, Wuhan, Peoples Republic of China.

Theme: Environmental Governance and Sustainability

This theme provides an opportunity to examine the issues of international, national, sub-national and local environmental governance in the context of the promotion of environmental, social/cultural and economic sustainability.

Distinguished Speaker for the Colloquium
: We are pleased to announce that Professor Dr. Michael G. Faure of Maastricht University has been confirmed as our Distinguished Speaker. Professor Faure has taught and written extensively on European environmental law as well as on Chinese environmental law.

Related Event -- Biofules and Climate Change Workshop

On Saturday, October 31st, the IUCN Academy will hold a Workshop on Biofuels and Climate Law. The full day meeting will provide an opportunity to examine the legal issues related to biofuels, particularly with respect to climate change. You can access the Biofuels and Climate Change Workshop - Wuhan here. We will be limiting attendance at this workshop, and registration will be on a first come-first served basis. Please indicate your intention to attend on the registration form.


Post Conference Field Trip

Our hosts have arranged a two-day field trip/tour on Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7 to visit the Three Gorges Dam and Water Power Station. The fee for this tour will be approximately $130 (US) or €100 (Euros) and this fee covers lunch and dinner for November 6 as well as breakfast and lunch for November 7.

Hotel accommodation (double occupancy) for the night of November 6th is included, with a supplement for single occupancy. The tour also includes a visit to an ancient city, Jingzhou.


Hotel and Conference Venue

The majority of Colloquium sessions will take place at the Wuhan East Lake Hotel, Donghu Road 142 in Wuhan.

Event Fees

The registration fees for the Colloquium, payable in US Dollars ($) and Euros (€), are as follows:
Participants from OECD Member Countries: $ 380, € 260
Participants from non-OECD Member Countries: $ 280, € 190
Student participants: $ 180, € 120

Registration fees cover all sessions, materials, and meals (including the dinners) as well as a courtesy pick-up/drop-off at the Wuhan airport.

Visas for Entry into China

A visa is needed by all foreign passport holders before arriving China. In most cases, the visa for China is valid for three months. Please make your own arrangements to obtain a visa through the closest Chinese embassy in your home base. Ordinary passport holders of Japan, Singapore and Brunei who visit China for sightseeing, doing business, visiting relatives or transit can enjoy a visa free period of 15 days.
