Environmental threats to the planet are amongst the greatest challenges we face as a global society. Promoting sustainable development, responding effectively to climate change and safeguarding global bio-diversity are urgent priorities.

In many jurisdictions, legal systems simply cannot cope with the myriad of environmental issues within their borders and beyond. To address the environmental challenges, there is a need to strengthen the rule of law and good environmental governance, particularly in developing countries.

Building capacity in environmental law will contribute to the promotion of well-designed legal instruments and policies at both the international and national levels.
